The Next Best Thing to Robert Redford
This was published in the 1970’s and advertised as an alternative to the “Better than Sex” cake. Sadly, Robert Redford isn’t very sexy any more, so maybe the recipe could use a new name. Feel free to suggest one!
1 C flour
1/2 C butter
1 C chopped pecans
8 oz softened cream cheese
1 C powdered sugar
8 oz Cool Whip, divided
1 large pkg (6-serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix
1 large pkg (6-serving size) instant chocolate pudding mix
3 C cold milk
Grated chocolate
Mix together flour, butter, and pecans unitl crumblike. Press into bottom of 13×9-inch pan and bake at 350 F until golden brown — about 15-20 minutes. Cool completely.
Combine the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and half the Cool Whip. Spread over the cooled crust. Then mix the pudding mixes with the milk and mix until smooth and thickened. Spread over the cream cheese layer. Spread the remaining Cool Whip on the top and garnish with grated chocolate. Refrigerate until serving time. Serves 16.

[…] Then I discovered that I am not alone! Because they’re on the web, other people use my recipes, too. I love knowing what people are searching for: “Robert Redford better than sex cake” or “mashed cauliflower” or “cake mix brownies.” […]

I remember this dessert from years
ago, with one exception. We made oursa
without the chocolate pudding, and added
one can of cherry pie filling.
This was a very tasty dessert, was
and still is easy to make.

What a great idea — since I like cherries and chocolate, I’d probably leave out the vanilla pudding, and use chocolate pudding and cherry pie filling.
We recently had an old favorite when Barry’s nephews came to visit, and the flavor reminded me of this recipe. If you have never eaten Dirt Cake, check it out.

I’ve been looking for this recipe for years. The recipe I had gotten from my mother was lost in a move. I seem to recall we used butter pecan instead of chocolate pudding mix.
